Custom made quilts…one stitch at a time!
Thanks for stopping by Striker Quilts! I specialize in making high-quality, custom quilts. My favorite quilts are those made with old clothes — tee shirts, men’s ties, baby or adult clothes. You’ll also see examples of rag quilts — those soft flannel quilts that are great for babies, kids going off to college, or the back of your sofa. All my quilts are made from quality cotton with cotton batting and are washable.
My goal is to work with you to design a unique quilt — everything from pattern to fabric choice. Whether it’s a memory quilt from old clothing, a gift for a friend or something for your home, you can be sure it will be personal!
Michele’s artistic talents are unsurpassed. Her Redskins-themed quilt, designed for our charity golf tournament, created the most competitive bidding of the night! It was a true masterpiece! – MA
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the process work?
All of my quilts are custom – no two are alike. My goal is to work with you to design a unique quilt — everything from pattern to fabric choice. If you’re interested in a tee shirt or clothes quilt, we’ll start by looking at your clothes and discussing what you want. For baby quilts, check out Baby Quilts to see what I’ve done for others.
Please contact me to begin the discussion of what you want.
Can we do this remotely?
Absolutely! We can coordinate the design and your preferences via email or phone. I recommend using UPS or FedEx to send any t-shirts or other clothes to me directly.
What size will my quilt be?
That’s up to you! Because this is custom and designed specifically for your tees or clothes, just let me know how you plan to use the quilt.
What fabrics can I use in my quilt?
Tee shirts, sweatshirts, polos, sports jerseys (except those that are a large open weave), flannels. Both the back and front of your tee shirt can be used, and in some cases, images that are on the sleeve. For clothes quilts, just about any outfit that you’ve worn can be included.
How should I prepare my tee shirts or clothes before meeting?
You just need to bring or send the items you want included. Please do not cut your tee shirts or clothes. I wash all fabrics before working with them.
Will my tee shirts be cut to a specific size?
No! The image on your tee shirt will determine the size of the block. So you may have some blocks that are 12×15, others that are 14×16 and still others that are smaller or larger. I will create a layout that incorporates all these different sizes.
I’ve heard people talk about sashing, borders, batting. What are those?
Sashing is the fabric that goes around the blocks. The border is the outside edge that frames the entire top. We’ll decide on those fabrics together, based on your tee shirts or clothes. The batting goes between the top and bottom – generally cotton, sometimes a blend of cotton and polyester. Your quilt will also have a double fold, hand-stitched binding
What is a Quilt Sandwich?
That’s the term used to describe the three layers of a quilt – the top, which is usually pieced, the batting in the middle, and the back. To keep the three layers together, quilts are usually quilted or tied. Your tee shirt or clothes quilt will be quilted by an experienced long arm quilter.
Can you add pictures?
Definitely. To see ideas of how photos can be incorporated, check out the pillow under Pillows and More. Under Special Occasion Quilts, there’s a quilt made from a young man’s clothes with his photos.
How long does it take for a custom quilt?
A custom quilt typically takes one to two months from start to finish. Please let me know if you have a deadline.
How do I take care of my custom quilt?
I wanted a quilt for my daughter to take to college, comprised of material from some of her favorite outfits from childhood. Michele was super easy to work with and had great ideas about how to compose our quilt; my daughter was thrilled with the results! -JG
